Graduate Intern
Shumayl Hassan

My name is Shumayl F. Hassan, and I am currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health at Trinity Washington University, with an expected graduation date of July 2025. I hold an Honor’s Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Toronto, where I graduated in November 2020 with double minors in Environmental Management and Philosophy.

As a graduate intern on the path to becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor, I have gained diverse experience through roles such as Brain Coach Volunteer at NeuroGrow Fitness Centre and internships at Eastern Panhandle Psychiatry, Winchester Community Mental Health Center, and Loudoun Psychiatric Care. These experiences have shaped my approach and reinforced my commitment to providing compassionate mental health care.

I am particularly passionate about supporting individuals grappling with depression, anxiety, mood disorders and enhancing relationships through couples counseling and family therapy. I value the versatility of therapeutic modalities, which allows me to tailor interventions to each client’s unique circumstances. Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Art/Expressive Therapies, Client-Centered Therapy, and Existential Therapy are the modalities I find myself leaning on most frequently as I develop my practice.

My counseling journey is driven by a deep commitment to combating the stigma surrounding mental health, especially within multicultural communities. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the impact of cultural stigma on mental health treatment. This inspired me to take action, including organizing interactive discussion panels during the pandemic to bring mental health awareness to the forefront of my community. Presenting on intergenerational trauma at the Social Justice Forum at Trinity Washington University further underscored my dedication to advocating for marginalized groups and addressing systemic barriers.

Fluent in both English and Urdu, I am committed to providing a safe and empathic atmosphere for my clients that respects religious and cultural differences. As a member of Chi Sigma Iota (Honors Society for Counseling Professionals), I have also completed specialized training in Narcan (Naloxone) administration and SBIRT for Health and Behavioral Health Professionals.

Beyond counseling, I find fulfillment in the arts through singing, acting, dancing, and painting. I cherish quiet moments with a cup of tea and my cat, and I value quality time with loved ones. My extensive travels across diverse cultures have deepened my appreciation for multiculturalism and inspired me to integrate cultural sensitivity into my counseling approach, ensuring every client receives personalized and effective care.

I eagerly look forward to contributing to the well-being of individuals at Aram Wellness Center, supporting their mental health journeys with empathy, respect, and unwavering dedication.
